Emergency/Disaster Preparedness with Pets
How to Prepare Your Pets for an Emergency or Disaster
Find a Safe Haven for Evacuation
If it isn’t safe for you, then it isn’t safe for your pets. Do not leave your pets behind.
Keep a list of nearby pet-friendly hotels or ask a close friend if your pets can stay with them. If you’ll need to stay in a shelter, it’s important to remember that pets usually aren’t allowed in these facilities. Our veterinarian can provide you with a list of boarding facilities and even animal shelters that accept pets during emergencies.
Emergency Supplies for Your Pet
It’s good to have a bag of emergency supplies and provisions ready to go for your pet, so you’ll be ready should an emergency and evacuation order strike.
When packing emergency pet supplies, plan for the worst. Assume you won’t be able to return home for several weeks. Bring food, water, medications, and everything your pet needs like a carrier, bedding, litter, food and water bowls, toys, an extra leash, and ID tags.
It’s also important to keep a copy of your pet’s vaccination records in your emergency kit in case you need proof of vaccination.
Microchip Your Pets
Your pet should always have a collar and ID tags, but a microchip will come in extra-handy in the event of a chaotic emergency situation. If your pet happens to go missing, ID tags can easily become lost. A pet microchip serves as a form of permanent identification and will increase the odds of being reunited with a lost pet.
